PAX East

Repertoire Productions was recently in town all the way from San Francisco and asked me to shoot a short video for their client Alienware Computers. The gig was for PAX East, which is essentially a computer gamer's expo/paradise. People came out in the thousands and I'd say 30% of them were dressed up in costumes of their favourite Gamer heroes. It was good fun and a nice introduction to a new (and growing) sub-culture.  This was also the first time I was able to get my hands on a Kessler CineSlide & the motion control machine Oracle. Although I didn't have enough time to use the machine to it's full potential, I did manage to get some great shots that added a lot of production value to the project. I especially enjoyed using it with a slow shutter speed and getting a sense of the movement of the crowd. Anyways, you can check out the video in the following link:

Repertoire also asked me to shoot a last minute video for their friends at Twitch.tv (video linked below).

Bringin Back That Ol Boston Rap

I used to listen to a lot of Hip Hop back when I was growing up in the "rough" streets of Whitehorse, Yukon. In those days Wu-Tang, Biggie, Nas, and 2Pac were constantly on my cd player (Kids, if you don't know what a CD player is, go down to your local antique store and they may have a few kicking around). In more recent years, the rap genre has pretty much dropped off my radar - I'll chalk it up to the music changing; not the fact that I might be getting old. However, the other week a Boston production company called Extraneous Noise, hired me to help shoot a live rap concert featuring a rapper by the name of J the S. It was a fun shoot which gave me a taste of the Boston underground Hip Hop scene. Needless to say, the sold out show brought back some old memories...and I've since found myself re-visiting some of those old classic Wu-Tang songs.

Water Sports

I've recently been working on creating a number of trailers for TimeDoc China and although I wasn't able to shoot the footage they gave me, scrubbing through it made me feel like I was along for the ride. The two spots are quite remarkable and beautiful. One is of a rafting trip down the Yangtze River and the other is of a sailing race off the coast of China. The other day, a friend from out of town came to stay with me for a few days and we started scheming on when we would do a similar rafting trip. Hopefully we don't have to wait too long!

Sticky: South Africa

On a motorcycle trip to South Africa last year, we spent a day or two checking out J-Bay, which is one of the top surf spots in the world. I managed to get some great footage of the locals catching some waves and decided to play around with AE, PS, and Premiere to make something of a mock intro to a surf film. Knitting on Wheels

In February of 2010 the Olympics were in full swing in Vancouver and the city was overflowing with spectators from all over the world. Traffic crawled at a snails pace, sidewalks overflowed, and there was a lineup for hotdog stands that went for two blocks! During these two weeks of madness, a small documentary crew was trying to navigate the city in order to film two bike messengers as they went about their daily lives. It just so happens that I was the director and co-producer on this film. It was an interesting time to shoot a doc on bike couriers - I think it was probably the heaviest traffic and busiest downtown core in the history of Vancouver. Perhaps we should have done a doc on knitting. We did however manage to get a great doc out of it, that even went on to screen at a few festivals.
